A Summary of Awakenings Fuming with rage and bitterness six friends band together to avenge the destruction of a small human settlement. Through sheer determination and stoic resolve they succeed, though at what cost? Because of their actions, one of them will fall to the enemy and Velthanjantle, the demonic avatar of Kargonis is resurrected. Though weak, the demon breaks free to reign havoc once again upon the world. Fifteen years later, the demon is fully healed and searching for the mysterious Three Chains of Gold; three relics from the War of the Gods which when united will bring about new balance among the Greater Realms. If Velthanjantle is able to find the chains the dark god could be free once more to walk among mortals and foil the decree set in place at the culmination of the War of the Gods by Ravina Estarra, the Goddess of Time. It falls on those who released the demon to gather their forces and train their armies and guilds to stop the end of the world. Together or separated, six mortals must set in motion the events necessary to save Reality from ultimate doom. Spite glows orange and is referred to often by Eldorion as his morbid lover. Spite is a 'her' not an 'it' so
'she' returns to his left hip whenever she is thrown. Honor glows blue and is an it, though
Eldorion is not above talking to Honor when he is disappointed. Honor drains the energy of those it kills
and provides Eldorion with a temporary speed boost. This enhancement called Supernatural Speed, is most relatable
to dimension shifting or phasing in that Eldorion will actually move above the rest of the world. People do
not slow down... Eldorion simply counts time differently. So, for approximately one second of normal time, Eldorion
exists inside of four seconds, which allows him to perform relatively faster than those around him. With both weapons
together Eldorion is able to bend light around him and become invisible for a limited time. He can
(and often will) allow the daggers to materialize from the invisible barrier selectively. Eldorion is crafty, sneaky and usually happy to go with the flow but when he does talk it is usually a sarcastic quip, or irritating jibe at anyone near him. Eldorion loves to think he is the best at what he does, though more often than not his self-centering is a jest... which just comes across making him sound narcissistic. Despite his generally good natured attitude he is a cold-hearted murderer. Typical of the High Elf race, Eldorion maintains long, slightly wavy blonde hair, delicately slanted emerald green eyes and an easy smile to show his nearly perfect teeth. Eldorion stands 6’3” tall, has a poised gait when he walks which is borderline arrogant and challenging. Eldorion is flirtatious with women regardless of their race, though he prefers his women as dangerous as he is, women who challenge him intrigue this assassin and Zariah has his interests peaked...
Raek's staff is made of several different terrains of which he has experienced throughout his life. His totem is made up of waving willows, fluffy clouds, angry fires, soft flowing ocean currents, free-falling leaves and riverbed silt among many other twisting natural materials. The shifting shades of his life's memories flow through the staff based on the knowledge he has acquired through his shaman training. Raek will often show wisdom beyond his years, though few will question his logic. Similarly unorthodox are the clothes Raek wears. While his wings are bound in animal sinew, Raek proudly displays a beaded headband of rattlesnake tails and a necklace comprised of sharks teeth and bear claws. Ivy-laced handwraps stretch up his arms as they twine around protectively to his shoulders where thick thorns have grown from the mossy fabric. Raek is covered in tabby orange fur though he wears pants made from the ocean currents them selves, held by an eerie eel belt. His thighs are protected from strategically placed bear paws and a snarling lion head hovers ominously before his chest. Raek is a Ritualistic Shaman and is capable of changing shape into many, many different species of animal though none but Raek himself truly understand his powers.
Brinn is a young Jier Fielamarr from the Tigerclaw Pride in Kelshin's Forest. His life aspirations up to his current age of nine were to become a Tigerclaw Bounder; one of the protectors of the Tigerclaw Pride. Raek however, has other plans for the young Thundersaber because of his raw magical aptitude. Both Brinn and his brother Jerrem are well endowed with this propensity for magic. Brinn's father died shortly after he was born, a hazard of being a Tigerclaw Bounder, leaving his mother a grieving widow. Brinn's mother listened to Raek's advice and sent Jerrem, the oldest brother, to the Temple of Sorcery under the tutelage of Bargiss. Raek then took it upon himself to teach young Brinn the ways of the shaman. Brinn enjoys the one-on-one attention he gets from Raek, and he thoroughly relishes getting under Raek's calm demeanor; exciting the old shaman's emotions.
Felissa is nearly as wide
as she is tall, built with solid shoulders and battle hardened muscles. Felissa bears a full suit of crystaline, Bluesteel
armor made in the ice forges of Frostholme, and enhanced by alchemical compounds crafted by her people. She carries
a rune-enchanted two-handed ax in each hand; Gorge and Whistle. Felissa spent many years traveling, far from
her home, in search of the perfect weaponsmith and Herald to create these special axes. She finally found him deep
in the hallowed halls of the Mountain Dwarf city Dif Gazrak. It was there she met Bargiss Vandelin and Dezrak. Whistle, made from Giantbone is pearly-white from handle to crown and has been strengthened with master runes. The name Whistle is derived from the slight hum that resonates from the weapon when Felissa uses in combat as if it were a machine toiling. With each successive kill, Whistle grows slightly in total size. Two ¾ diamond shaped blades adorn each side, thus there are four blades total on this ax. Each blade has a top point, a center point and a bottom point, and the blades are spaced only two finger’s width apart on both sides. When saturated, Whistle is enormous; roughly the size of a small horse and even Felissa with her great strength must wield it with both hands. At any time while Whistle is humming, the weapon is able to release a bolt of crackling electricity. Gorge is made from a particularly hard, marbled black metal known as Bremlite. The thin handle tops in three crescent-moon razor edges which encircle the head of the massive ax, parallel to the ground. The top edge has a slightly larger radius around the shaft of the axe than the center one, and the lower edge has a slightly smaller radius than the center edge. Gorge bears two jagged tips at the top and bottom of the shaft which makes the weapon appear like a wicked signpost. All along the weapon's body are jagged slivers which become embedded in the enemies struck by Gorge. As per the weapon's runic design, the slivers slowly draw strength from the dying and transfer it to Felissa.
Bargiss Vandelin was born on the
continent Dyrefoll. His parents, Bahlistel and Orellia, died when Bargiss was but an infant during a battle remembered
as the Rising of Ravinoros. Fleeing from war-torn Dyrefoll, Grettis Lightcastle rescued the baby Bargiss and took
him a great distance to the relatively untamed land of Talonus. Grettis taught Bargiss to love D'Aryasia, the Goddess
of Protection and the rudimentary basics of Spellweaving before he was even able to walk. Bargiss learned quickly
and grew into a fine man, capable with both smithy hammer and farming scythe. Bargiss' true strength however, became
apparent when he preached the word of D'Aryasia; and he did so, to any who would listen, and even many who would
not. During
his late adolescent years, Bargiss' and Grettis travelled all through the continent of Tyvonis, sharing the word of
D'Aryasia and teaching the art of Spellweaving for food, water and coin. All the while, Bargiss grew stronger with both his working hands, his
faith and his ability with the Rainbow Braid. Throughout his travels, Bargiss met many different races, and encountered
many different magics, all of which garnered his respect. It was Bargiss' friendly smile and caring attitude that put
him in good graces with Raek the shaman, Felissa Gemgate, and Eldorion Silverleaf.
Kinek'Aras was raised as most other drakes to worship Reilsitlam'Abormons
- the Queen of the Forest Dragons - as a goddess. Particularly short, especially for a member of his race, Kinek'Aras
worked determinedly through his youth to become a great warrior. Kinek'Aras became a fine warrior and joined the Farflier
Hunters soon after maturity. Kinek'Aras met his life mate within the Farflier Hunters and bred many whelps with Kelin'Eshra.
Upon her claiming day, she became an ambassador and eventually moved to the great city Kazaroth to perform her duties in the
name of the Queen of the Forest Dragons. During his
mate's tenure, Kinek'Aras befriended Kelshin Silverleaf, a legendary warrior among the High Elves and the leader of the Elven
Exodus after the War of the Gods. It was during his stay with Kelshin that Kinek'Aras met young
Eldorion, the shaman Raek, and his lover Princess Fairtide, and the drake was quickly brought into the tight circle of friends. Years later, as all of Kinek'Aras' family were representing the Jungle
Drake society in Kazaroth, his entire brood was murdered. That was the day that changed Kinek'Aras' life.
The drake fell inward and began loathing life, his friends, his livelihood and everything that had once mattered to him no
longer meant anything. It was then, stuck in a downward slump when Kinek'Aras met Peotril, a Darkling spellweaver...
Princess Fairtide was born the unwanted daughter of Gavel and Pormotia Fairtide, the rulers of two Deep-ocean Merloch cities. Princess was uneducated and alone most of her younger life until she joined the Curadores in Alintuas. She served most of her tenure as a portal guard until fate introduced her to Tyvonis. The young merloch woman, along with four other hand-selected students from around the world were trained in private by the master martial artist. Tyvonis toured his students through vast forests, mighty mountains, deepest oceans and even the floating continent Ghelldagra's Nest. It was during her travels through Kelshin's Forest that she met and fell in love with the young, headstrong fialt shaman Raek. After six years of grueling instruction Princess returned to her home beneath the ocean to learn that her parents had ventured out into the untamed oceans far to the west of Alintuas, in hopes to discover more lost members of the merloch race. In their absence however, her favored brother Gift Fairtide had been given over control of the city's lawmaking initiatives. Gifts power was not absolute however, in each city, he had a coven of shamans as peers, and together, the thirteen shamans could overrule any decision made by Gift if they felt it necessary. Despite her demented brother's wishes and because of her esteemed relationship with Tyvonis, the Alintuan shamans endorsed Princess as the Ambassador to Orielle, a position far above what her brother had intended for her. Princess continues her Tyvokai training regularly which combines the runic magic of Heraldry with devastating combat techniques. Among the five chosen trainees, Princess is uniquely endowed with a natural bony exoskeleton that enables her strikes to cause intense damage to those she attacks. With her training in Heraldry, Princess has also learned to magically enhance her garments, such as the golden gown she wears, a gift from her one true love...
Zariah was born on the continent of Dyrefoll. When she was approximately twenty years old, she bore witness to the betrayal and destruction of her entire community. Hiding for many years from the traitors, she lived alone off the land where she learned to forage and hunt, but mostly, the habitats of many forest-dwelling creatures and animals. For a decade, Zariah plagued the traitors of her people with hit-and-run guerrilla tactics until her opportunity presented itself. With her home all but obliterated, Zariah stowed away on the same ship that carried Grettis Lightcastle and Bargiss Vandelin to the continent Talonus. Soon after, Zariah found a new home in Kelshin's Forest where she met her lover Eldorion and her two soulmates Soda and Ados. Soda, a black dire panther with thin, horizontal white stripes is playful and a bit clumsy, and has learned to take commands from Zariah's left hand, much like a shield. Ados is a white panther with thin, horizontal black stripes. Ados is all business when anyone other than Zariah and Soda are nearby. Ados has learned to take commands from Zariah's right hand... the sword. Together, all three companions enjoy hard sprints over difficult forest terrain, and hunting challenging prey.
Brohm Flamestoke was born and raised in poverty, in the small suburbs of Kalen Dorr. His dreams growing up were to get into a position where he could change the dire living conditions of the Lower City. Brohm is well practiced with a long-sword, having grown up the youngest of five brothers, though he has no formal training. When Brohm was a young man, his father and four brothers, all members of the Dorrian Guard, were sent west on a humanitarion mission to Kazaroth. Two years after they left, Brohm's mother was stricken with a plague of the mind, and committed accidental suicide. With no one left in his home, Brohm joined the Dorrian Guard. For two years he searched in vain for answers as to the whereabouts of his father and siblings. Brohm had given up hope when he overheard a few of his fellow guards jesting about a new school in the south that was looking for 'poor fools' to join; one which would teach them to use the Rainbow Braid. The next day, Brohm abandoned what little he had left and embarked on a two year journey to find the school he had only heard about in passing...
Having been reborn in the Black Pools of Mount Cambalis as the prophesied Prince of Lava, Belthas'Almon became the ancient dragon Cambalis' abused pet. Through more than half a century, Belthas'Almon was kept in the bowels of the mountain where he oversaw the raising of an army of Fire Drakes to counter the legions of Jungle Drakes in nearby Kelshin's Forest. Over the course of a decade, Belthas'Almon remained the sole outlet of the dragon's burning temper. As a result, Belthas'Almon became a ruthless killer, full of hatred, anger and rage over his self-imposed imprisonment inside Mount Cambalis. Belthas'Almon eventually ventured out, leading his drakes on several excursions to collect trinkets as gifts to his master, which would placate Cambalis, temporarily. On one such outing, Belthas'Almon uncovered the deadly weapon known as Bloodrot which he claimed as his own. Bloodrot, a snake which could solidify into a four-pointed dagger and inject a deadly poison into its victims, became emotionally closer to Belthas'Almon than any living being could. To the Prince of Lava, others were expendable. Recently, the dragon Cambalis sent Belthas'Almon to nearby Orielle in order to find a powerful suit of armor to add to his collection, and after six years, Belthas'Almon has yet to uncover its location. Cambalis was so enthralled in the mortal toils of the nearby settlement that he forced Belthas'Almon to engage with the other races without slaughter. Belthas'Almon's instructions were clear, he was not to harm the citizens of the small hamlet. When Belthas'Almon grudgingly approached Bargiss Vandelin, the good natured theologian and spellweaver readily accepted Belthas'Almon into the Temple of Sorcery, hoping that the drake would find solace in the love of the goddess, D'Aryasia.
Kalil was born in a small village on a craggy bough near the center of the Giant Steppes, south of Kalen Dorr. A small sect of Fire Drake deserters had set up their home in hiding from Cambalis' pet Prince of Lava, Belthas'Almon's army. The drakes were religious zealots of Braykelis'Thash and had followed their god's will to the low stony hills not far from fabled Kryptin River. When the Fire Drakes fled Mount Cambalis, they brought their marichoa slaves with them. Several years in hiding had passed when Kalil was born, though those years had not boded well for the refugee Fire Drakes. The terrain was dappled in ogres, giants and myriad other hostile barbaric creatures. During one such incursion, Kalil's mother and father placed him in a wicker basket and floated him in the Kryptin River to allow fate a chance to save their only son. The Kryptin River is legendary for its unnatural flowing patterns. It does not connect to any ocean, yet flows in several directions, seemingly regardless of the pull of Reality's two moons. Undoubtedly the most bizzare facts surrounding the Kryptin River are its blood-red colored water, and they way it flows against gravity in certain areas. Kalil's basket took him to the Krymson Inlet of Kalen Dorr's Lower Side where Kilb and Lab pulled the four-year-old pup to safety. The two starving brigands took him in, and raised Kalil into a fine young thug. Little did the Anubi'Marich know that a simple 'muscle' job would change his life forever, and earn him a place in the hearts of the Frost Dwarves, as well as the spirits of two, nearly forgotten gods. Author's Note: As the first in the series, I decided to keep Awakenings at
the standard length (a little under 130,000 words). There are already plenty of new magics, abilities, powers and races
for readers to absorb, and I hope you enjoy your adventure through the Realm of Reality. If you are pleased with Awakenings,
be certain to keep your eyes on the website for the sequel (tentatively titled) "Plague", which will feature new
races, potent magic and even more high intensity action.
